Rwanda is a stunning country, known for its lush, bamboo-covered slopes and the majestic Virunga Volcanoes. Here, the late Dian Fossey dedicated 20 years to studying the behavior of the endangered mountain gorilla, a journey that inspired the filmmakers of “Gorillas in the Mist.” Join us for a Rwanda safari and experience a country that is embracing a vibrant future while offering one of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters on earth. The forested mountains are alive with birds, butterflies, and primates, making a Rwanda Gorilla Safari one of Africa’s most captivating experiences.
Rwanda offers unique delights for travelers. Parc National des Volcans, home to the mountain gorillas, is a testament to Fossey’s legacy. Nyungwe Forest, one of Central Africa’s largest montane forests, is famous for its large troops of colobus monkeys and diverse orchids. Akagera National Park features a savannah habitat populated by elephants, hippos, and crocodiles, while Lake Kivu is an idyllic inland sea surrounded by steep terraced hills. The rich culture of Rwanda is exemplified in Butare, the country’s second city, which boasts one of Africa’s finest cultural museums.
We offer specially designed gorilla trekking safaris to provide this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our 4-day “Gorillas in Parc National des Volcans” tour is the perfect complement to a Kenya, Tanzania, or Uganda safari. The critically endangered mountain gorillas are Rwanda’s main attraction, and many experts agree that it’s one of the best places in Africa to observe these magnificent primates. However, Rwanda’s attractions extend beyond gorillas.
With its diverse Central African ecology—mountains, rainforests, volcanoes, and lakes—Rwanda offers bird watching, fishing expeditions, hiking, and game viewing. To ensure you make the most of your visit, check our ‘When to Go to Rwanda’ section for climate insights.
Rwanda’s safaris are diverse, even for a small country. Experience our 4-day “Primates and Birds in Nyungwe Safari,” which showcases 13 primate species in pristine montane forest. For an adventurous trek, consider the 14-day “Classic Rwanda & Uganda Wildlife and gorilla Safari,” spanning from Kigali to Kampala or vice versa and including visits to multiple wildlife hotspots, including a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park, home to approximately 350 mountain gorillas.
When to Visit – Rwanda Safari Guide
Rwanda, a tropical equatorial country, is a year-round destination, though the best time to visit depends on your interests. The climate varies geographically; eastern Rwanda is drier than the lush forests of the north and west, and winter in Kigali can be cool.
Rwanda has four distinct seasons:
- Short Dry Season (mid-December to early February): Ideal for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, as the drier forests are more accessible.
- Long Rainy Season (mid-February to June): This season brings muddy roads and heavy rain, but it’s excellent for photography and for tracking chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest.
- Long Dry Season (June to September): The best time for hiking in Nyungwe Forest and gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, with drier conditions and fewer mosquitoes.
- Short Rainy Season (October to mid-December): Expect heavy rains, especially in the eastern mountains. While not the best time for gorilla trekking, the gorillas remain resident year-round. November to March is ideal for bird watchers, as migratory species enhance Rwanda’s already impressive avifauna.
